Above is a presentation cup to "Lulu" and with that name I could not resist buying it. This one has a simple leaf and vine band on top and bottom and is marked JLW for John L. Westervelt of Newburgh, N.Y. Rainwater reports that Westervelt did make cups, however even if he did he may have brought milled bands and handles from specialized manufacturers. It will be interesting to see if this band turns up of New York City silver or perhaps some other city's silver. This cup also has interesting detail surrounding each cartouche as it is very similar to the serpent scale on a Swiss beaker Perhaps this detail was made by a similar punch. IP: Logged |
