This is one of a pair of salts by Baldwin & Co., Newark...Baldwin seems to have used several die-rolled bands, including at least one the die for which was made by Ferdinand Herpers in Newark.

Nah, it's just a bleachy photograph. It is really rather small (maybe 3 inches across) and the salt dish is loose--sits in the frame. I have only ever seen a mustard pot of this form by Baldwin (in the Fales collection--where is it now?) with a glass insert instead of the silver bowl. THe bowls have the marks on these two.

Ulysses: This is ceertainly a classy piece, but how do the heads relate to the band? I assume there is one for each leg and that each is applied to a recess in the band, which would then require a band of fixed length for each size of object. Milled bands are essentially endless repetitions of uniform width that can be cut to any length and applied wherever needed. Is there any possibility that the bands on this piece are cast rather than rolled?

I wish they were that carefully thought out...look closely, and you can see that the band was just whacked to fit the head on...although at first glance it appears the band was "designed" to hold the masks. I mean a die-rolled or milled band that was messed up to take the mask. Hadn't thought about a cast feature--the feet and masks should by rights be cast, yes?
