[26-1043] Hi - I recently acquired several pieces of sterling and plate flatware pieces from my grandmothers estate. I have been successful in identifying most all pieces with the exception of these forks. In case the photos are not clear, they are marked JARDEN & BRO, 3, TY or TV in a square, a profile, and a lion facing left. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like a copy of McGrew's would be helpful here... I don't have mine handy right now, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with the answer. IP: Logged |

McGrew gives only three examples of a left-facing lion and a bust together with no other figure (pp. 82-3), and for none of these does he list a "JARDEN & BRO" retailer. Only one of these comprises two individual dies; this combo is tentatively attributed as a secondary mark of Wm. Gale, NYC. IP: Logged |

So was TY Mr. Gale's alternate identity? I continue to find many of McGrew's conclusions dubious. The sellers are most likely Samuel and Jacob Jarden, merchants in Philadelphia until the 1860s. IP: Logged |

Can you make the photo of the spoon just a little bigger so that the top decoration is clear. The beaded pattern was made by quite a few manufacturers, but sometimes small details can distinguish one manufacturer's pattern from another. It could be that whoever made this spoon also made them with their name stamped on the item. IP: Logged |

The large number 3 on the back is something that appears on early plated silverware. Have no idea what it refers to. Beyond that, this is a variant of beaded edge, which is still produced, even in stainless. Very traditional pattern, hard to pin down dates. IP: Logged |
