I just was asked if I was familiar with Bixler's Jewelers (America's oldest jewelers). I had to admit I wasn't. The Bixler family member told that Bixlers used to make coin & sterling wares. See Belden page 62 for the mark. Does anyone have any examples to share? Also see:

I do not own, but have seen any number of pieces countermarked BIXLER, all on standard goods of the 1850-1880 period and most of New York manufacturer. I looked into the family some years ago for my project. From my notes: Christian Bixler (18 JUN 1763-29 Jan 1840) m 26 Apr 1789 Catherine Opp The direct line stops there; Jacob's only son Floyd became a dry goods merchant. After Jacob's death, the store business was taken up by one of the descendant's of William's four brothers. Christian was primarily a clockmaker; he reportedly made over 800 in his lifetime. William's partner noted in Belden was his brother Daniel Lewis (3 OCT 1810-12 DEC 1892), who was apparently a bookkeeper; he left the partnership to become a bank clerk. IP: Logged |
