Above is a waste bowl with the mark of Hugh Wishart of New York. The rest of the set was gone when I came upon this bowl and I have no idea why it was not sold with the rest of the set. In any event I am glad I was able to get part of the set.

The octagonal body is mirrored with an octagonal foot. Bright cut engraving and roulette work surround the bowl just below the lip. The lip has flat strip molding that has the appearance of the lip being rolled over. There is a very similar waste bowl on page 284, Volume II of Elegant Plate – Three Centuries of Precious Metals in New York City that is has the mark of Samuel Bowne. Perhaps Mr. Bowne and Mr. Wishart shared the same source for this bowl. The Wishart bowl is 7 inches in diameter at the widest point and 5 inches high.

A bowl of similar design, but with twelve sides in shown on page 90 of Three Centuries of Alexandria Silver, by Catherine B. Hollan. It is on a square base and is about the same height, but 8 ¾ inches in diameter.

Does anyone know who originated this design? It does appear that is was only made for a short time as most of the ones I have seen are thought to be right around 1800.

Not a lot to add--the separation of waste bowls (in an age when people forget what they were for) is not uncommon. Newark owns a perfectly dull waste bowl we purchased in the 1950s (for no good stylistic reason, but in honor of some staff member)that is from a set (Eoff & Howell?) that is now at Bayou Bend in Houston. The form is really a circle with concave panels--and I confess I'd never focused on where or when it appears. Is it a form that shows up in English silver of this period a lot? I can see that by 1810 or so it would have been supplanted by new, more Empire forms--this is a carryover of 1790s forms (as I see it)...I hope someone else can come up with a more conclusive response.
