I am hoping that someone could point me in the right directions in regards to trying to find out more information on a silversmith circa 1678-1715. Are there specific geneology websites that provide such historical documentation? IP: Logged |

Francis Bassett? There are many sites. The two most prominent are Ancestry.com and the LDS Church. Both have vast amounts of data on line, ranging from fact to fantasy. IP: Logged |

Yes, Francis Bassett is the silversmith in question. My interests to find out who and what this person was all about is getting the best of me. I have not come across a American Silversmith as far back as this and I the curiosity is getting the bestter of me. My limited google search as led me to links with The Salem Witch Trials to possible connections to someone on the Mayflower...a very vast contrast of documentation. Thank you so much for the tips! Well, he's not particularly early and there is no known silver by his hand, but what little is known of him can be found in Kane's Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers: A Biographical Dictionary. IP: Logged |

Which spoon is that? Can you share a picture with us? A piece proven to be by Bassett would be quite a discovery. IP: Logged |

There is a pair of tongs on one of the internet auction/sale sites by Bassett. If these are the tongs you are referring to they a stylistically too late for Francis Bassett. It would be nice to see what/who your are referring to. If Francis Bassett is entered on any search engine a whole bunch of people pop up with that name from different dates. Good luck on your search. IP: Logged |

The pieces I have in question are small tea spoons with construction consistant to that of spoons produced during that time period. Please note that coin silver is something that I am just learning about so most of my 'education' has been through reading rather than actual handling the product. The challenge here is that the pieces will eventually be for sale, hence my inability to post images (per forum rules). I have tried to keep my inquiry as general as possible. IP: Logged |
