Even though I knew there was a repair to the handle/bowl juncture I had to have it. The federal shield and sunburst grabbed my attention. IP: Logged |

And rightly so - beautiful work! What's the whole piece? Teaspoon? Ladle? IP: Logged |

Is the rising sun-man symbolic of anything in particular, do you know? Something Masonic, maybe? IP: Logged |

It is part of Masonic iconography
but also used in its general sense of new beginning, end of darkness, etc. IP: Logged |

The Rising Sunburst was a common decorative motif aound the 2nd half of the 18th century and a bit into the nineteenth century. It is seen often on paper items and carved into wood objects. I do not think, actually do not know, if it is attributable to any fraternal groups. Just saw your masonic piece Wev. Where do you come up with these great pieces? I'll give 75 cents plus tax; like sure you will. [This message has been edited by argentum1 (edited 01-29-2008).] IP: Logged |

Early days of that web auction site -- for a song. It is from Lodge No 6, Dublin and dated 1765 (the only earlier Irish jewel (1763) is in the Royal Irish Masonic Museum). It is not signed, which is typical. Here is the other side

I always enjoy a nice bit of engraving. Some of the best federal period flatware engraving seems to come out of New York. The Sayre shop produced some great examples like yours, but I am partial to John Burger. Thanks for sharing, Brent IP: Logged |

By coincidence, I have acquired a damaged Sayre spoon. I will need to look to see if it is bright cut as well. I was talking to a collector in Long Island about the addiction to silver. I hear there is treatment. All I have found is buying more. Fred IP: Logged |

Yes, there is a cure for silver addiction. It is called 'the grave'. When I go they will have to pry my dead, boney fingers off that last teapot. Of course by then I will have a bunch of disappointed relatives as I will have spent my last, thin dime on that teapot. IP: Logged |

Above is a very similar spoon to that shown by argentum1. This one is a teaspoon by the Philadelphia silversmith Samuel Alexander, but it does not have the sunburst behind the shield. The rest of the engraving carries forth the same design elements and probably was made around the same time. I think both spoons are very attractive. Argentum1 and I should not go shopping together. You are correct in that we should not go shopping togeather. It would be embarrassing, two grown adults getting tossed into jail for getting into a knockdown and dragout fight over a spoon. IP: Logged |
