Just purchased this spoon today in Chesapeake, VA. It is unmarked. Picked it up because it definitely looks coin; it had an unusual form to me; and it has an attractive monogram. The length is three and five-eighths inches. It has a lot of scratches which give me the impression that some rough cleaning was done to it. The workmanship is excellent, but the years of wear and less than ideal treatment have taken their toll. Is this form or style familiar to anyone? Thank you for taking the time to even have a look.

A salt spoon may have gotten a lot of scratches from being shoveled into a bunch of salt. Have not seen the ridges before. Hopefully someone will have a clue as to origin. Nice looking piece. IP: Logged |

This form of bowl is found on English and American salt and sugar shovels from the late 18th to the 19th Centuries with both Old English and Fiddle style handles. They are not as common as the conventional spoon shaped bowls, and those dating before patterned silver are rather scarce. IP: Logged |

With that elongated handle, I would not be surprised if the salt spoon were of Virginia origin. No way to prove it without a mark, but the shape says Southern to me. Nice piece! Brent IP: Logged |

I have seen this shovel form fairly frequently in New England pieces as well. However, the ridges are a new design element to me-very nice. IP: Logged |
