I do not know whether I should call myself a 'junk buyer' or 'Early America silver social worker'. Bought these to keep them out of the melting pot. It appears to have suffered the damaging effects of fire at the bow end as well as an earlier repair to the bow end. There is no makers mark. It was either never done or obliterated by the fire/heat source. They would have been a really great sugar tong with the bright cut engraving and the bird on the bowl end.

Funny how things circle around. These tongs were sent to me for inspection about 8 years ago. They remain the only example of swagged bowls that I have come across.

What a great learning/teaching resource those tongs are, probably moreso in their current state than if they were in A1 condition. They seem to show where the engraving has worn/corroded/burnt through at the bow end, the join of the arms looks clearly to be seen, and I've never seen (illustrated or 'live') swaged bowl decoration like that on tongs. The bright cutting of the arms is so much of its age. Well done in saving them!

Rare, yes, but such swaged decorations also appear on the bowls of salt spoons and mustard ladles which could utilize the same swages (birds, shells, urns, drops, etc.) as the grips on tongs, so this is not unexpected. And let's not forget the acorn grips plus the thinner shell and lion paw grips that also share the same swages as salt spoons and mustard ladles.

Quite right, Swarter -- I should have been more specific, saying a bird form swage.
