Over the years (Actually it feels more like decades.) I've managed to accumulate a number of boxes of coin silver spoons. Deciding to take a stroll down memory lane (Well that's not entirely true, because I haven't the foggiest as to where I got most of these things.) I've begun to sift through the boxes. Here is the first of many that have me stumped. This little pointed end spoon, about 5 3/16", with a shell back is marked T.S. The ends of top bar of the T turn downward -this is very faint and nearly impossible to see in my photo. Is this the mark of Thomas Skinner? If not who? Is this from the 18th or 19th century? What do you guys think? IP: Logged |

Robert Alan Green's mark #1240, attributed to Thomas Shields, may be your mark. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 04-21-2008).] IP: Logged |

That section of Green is taken from Currier, who shows that mark with a question mark. Published marks definitely attributed to Shields are without periods or with a single pellet midway between the letters (see wev's list of marks). Thomas Shields lived until 1819, but there is no evidence I have seen yet that he worked beyond 1794, although it is certainly possible. This spoon, with its script engraving, pointed bowl, and square or rectangular shank is most likely after 1800. That said, I don't know who else it could be. Thomas Skinner died in 1761 -- much too early for this form of spoon. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 04-21-2008).] IP: Logged |
