These may not hold a candle to most of the pieces in the new Fletcher & Gardiner book and exhibit, Silversmiths to the Nation (soon to close at the Met, but going to the Winterthur this summer) but they are nevertheless among the more florid sugar tongs I've seen:
Threaded fiddle overall pattern, but I've never seen another with anything like those bowls. The two bowls are quite distinctively unique in details, so evidently repoussé rather than swaged. The mark is T. FLETCHER, Fig 11 from the catalog but without the accompanying PHILA stamp. I haven't seen the exhibit, but the book/catalog is certainly worthwhile. And of course I'm fond of these tongs as well.... IP: Logged |

Some years ago I saw a pair of unmarked salt spoons with the same bowl treatment -- wish I'd bought them. . . IP: Logged |
