Another question yet again.
Did Taylor&Hinsdale use this pseudomark or is this someone else? Thanks for any suggestions/help. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately I can't make out what the pseudo is. According to the Darling Foundation they imported from Bradbury & Sons of Sheffield, 1816-24. Your mark here is a different one from the T&H shown in the Darling (the ampersand in yours is smaller), but the strong serifs on the T are the same as the mark there so I do think you have the right T&H. I just can't tell what the pseudomark might be. Nice tongs, too. IP: Logged |

This may be by Taylor & Hamilton of Glasgow - they are known to have marked only with the maker's mark and a tree mark. The hallmark on your tongs could possibly be a rubbed Glasgow tree mark. See Turner's dictionary of Scottish provincial silversmiths. IP: Logged |

Forgot to mention they are listed as circa 1783, which could fit the period of your tongs. IP: Logged |

The Glasgow town mark does seem to fit what is visible of the mark best. At the same time, the form reminds of French tongs that have passed my way. IP: Logged |

I blinked twice when I saw this just now -- because I had done a search just yesterday on marks on a piece (a pendant thimble and case) that looked similar. Then I remembered that mine was H&T (not T&H) -- Hilliard and Thomason. Otherwise, amazingly similar. My little piece carried the Birmingham anchor...and to my eye, the first image looks more like an anchor than a tree. IP: Logged |

Glasgow certainly fits the form, too. If I hadn't been so tired yesterday I probably could've gotten to that, but when I saw the reference that the NY T&H were known to import from Britain I guess my mind shut down.... IP: Logged |

These tongs are a close resemblance to a pair on the silversugartongs site. The ones on the site are attributed Alexander Gairdner, Edinburgh, 1785. IP: Logged |
