Above is a chatelaine clip with the mark for Emmor Jefferis. From WEV's American Silversmiths Mr. Jefferis worked from 1827 to 1842 as a silversmith and dentist in Wilmington Delaware. This little clip is 2 5/8 inches long and somehow got separated from the rest of the chatelaine.
At sometime in his life Mr. Jefferis invested in mulberry trees for the silk trade, but apparently that venture failed and he was left in poverty.

Attempts to enter the silk business were also made in South Carolina and Georgia in the late 16th century and early 17th century. Does anyone know if Mr. Jefferis's investment was in mulberry trees grown in the United States or was it a foreign investment?
