This is one just for everyone to pencil into their reference books. Samuel A. Jarden, of Philadelphia (ca. 1828-1843) and Baltimore (1843-1854), then again in Philadelphia by 1859, Daguerrean artist and silversmith. He may have only been a silverplater, but there is so little on him it's hard to say for sure. Only piece to come to light, that I'm aware of, is a salt spoon marked incised S A JARDEN. He was in partnership with his brother in 1859, but apparently alone prior to this. IP: Logged |

The 1859 Philly city directory lists John S. and Samuel A. Jardon as J. S. JARDON & BRO., electroplaters, at 304 Chestnut. W. W. Jardon, burnisher, is listed separately at the same address. IP: Logged |

If my interpretation is correct, it may be worth noting that the July to December 1865 IRS Tax Assessment lists S A Jarden at 306 Chestnut as an agent for Krider & Biddle at 618 Chestnut. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 10-18-2008).] IP: Logged |

The first two Samuel A Jardens mentioned at the beginning of this thread may be the same person, but the third one is unlikely. The two silverplaters John S Jarden who was born in Pennsylania in about 1832 and appears to have died on 9 November 1863 while serving in the Civil War in a Heavy Artillery Regiment as a Captain and Samuel A Jarden who was born in about 1863 and died in about 1874 are not of the correct generation.
