I would appreciate the help of any form members with additional information on this smith. Referenced in Dr. Caldwell's Tennessee Silversmiths, Anderson appears in advertisements for Knoxville, Knox County TN in 1819, but apparently there are no records of him there after this. With the help of Middle Tennessee historian Rick Warwick, we've found him then in late 1819 and in 1820 in the Williamson County, Tennessee tax & Census records. A large punch ladle dating in form to ca. 1810 surfaced from a Franklin, Williamson County family bearing an initial mark of "RA". I feel confident this is Robert Anderson's mark for that brief time he was in Franklin, Tennessee, but would like additional documention of this smith's work and travels, if possible. IP: Logged |

Robert Anderson was in Washington, PA from 1790 - 1816 (with one record for 1797 in Lancaster). He was working as a silversmith and clockmaker at least from 1798 - 1808 in Washington. Between 1808 and 1816 he held several elected offices - Sheriff, Town Council, and then General Assembly. By 1819 he was in Knoxville TN. I have no record of any silver from him while in PA. There was a James D. Anderson who was in Vickburg, Mississippi from 1844 to 1849 and then spend several years in New Orleans. Is there any connection between these to Andersons? IP: Logged |

I think we have strayed to a second silversmith. Robert Anderson of Pennsylvania was born 1776 son of Robert Anderson Sr. & Elizabeth Clark, and worked in partnership of Anderson & Hutchison. There is no indication that I can find that he ever went to Tennessee. The Robert Anderson who practiced as a silversmith in Tennessee was born in Inverness, Scotland. Likely he apprenticed under his father of the same name, who was active in Inverness during the 1780s. There is a good chance they descended from the Scottish goldsmith John Anderson who as working ca. 1501. Anyhow, he doesn't show up in Knox County for the 1820 Census, but tax & Census records show him as HOH in Williamson County, TN that year. If anyone has further information, I would appreciate it. This scant bit of information may not even be about the correct gentleman I'm afraid, but Robert Anderson bought tracts of land in Williamson County at a penny an acre in 1827 and 1828 from the State of Tennessee. The sale was authorized by a state law dating from 1823. "Robert Anderson" bought land in Williamson County again in 1847. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 07-29-2013).] IP: Logged |
