I did a search but found no buttons. The buttons are 1 1/8th inch high by 7/8th inches wide. I can not find the initial mark. Does anyone know who this might be? If better images are needed please let me know. Thanks for any assistance. IP: Logged |

Hi argentum1! I cannot read the mark, can you tell me what the letters are, or who you think/know who the maker is? Thanks. Jersey IP: Logged |

The letters look like 'JF' to me. Is that correct, argentum? IP: Logged |

The maker's initials are JF - any number of possibilities. Is there any provenance on these? IP: Logged |

Better resolution and larger. No provenance that I know of. They were purchased on that west coast site about a year ago. IP: Logged |

Hello again! My best shot is..........there was a James Fenton in Birmingham England who was a thimble maker, perhaps there is a connection? Jersey IP: Logged |

I cannot comment on this button, but from experience I know English silver bucklemakers used to send silver items overseas without any assay marks, only their own stamp. Probably to avoid paying for the assay, or maybe slightly sub-standard silver which they thought the poor colonials would not detect. After 1784, this tendency seemed to get worse - the avoidance of the need to reclaim duty and the reluctance I suspect of Americans to get something with King George's head on it ! So never discount the chance of an item being English if it has no Lion Passant . IP: Logged |

The small weight (looks to be under 10dwt) would have exempted it from hallmarking for at least most of the 18thC if English. IP: Logged |
