Here's spoon from a recent lot purchase that looks like it has a possible maker/retailer identification. (And then there's always the possibility that this identification is already in a reference that I do not have In 1871 Henry Harper advertised in the South Jersey Republican, Hammonton, New Jersey as a dealer in watches, jewelry and silverware at 722 Chestnut Street opposite "Old Masonic Hall" Philadelphia. (Formerly at 520 Arch Street). There is a Henry Harper listed in the 1860 U S Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who was a silversmith.

I never know whether to catalogue Henry Harper as a maker or a retailer. I suspect he was some of both. He is listed in Rainwater as a partner in the firm of Watts & Harper from ca. 1859-62. His name is on one double-die-struck pattern, an OLIVE variant with what looks like a grape leaf, but the pattern has also been seen with Wm. Faber's backstamp. Of the 3 engraved patterns I've seen carrying his mark, one looks like a Watts and one like a Faber. The other is a generic Philadelphia-style pattern. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your comments trefid. Both sounds fair to me. Henry Harper is listed as both a silversmith and jeweler in the census's as well as an importer of watches. IP: Logged |
