As distinctive as this gentleman's name is, he is someone that is not easily traced in the census's for me.

His name appears in Doggett's New York City Directory, for 1849-1850 with the comment fancygoods. It is listed in the 1869 New York City directory with the comment combs, 1143 Broadway. And it is listed in the 1890 New York City directory with the comment jeweler, 33 W 27th.

The death of a Zebedee M Quimby is recorded in New York city on 8 April 1896, age 80, certificate number 11997.

Dispatches; New York Times, 01 April 1859
"Gen. Cazneau, Brigadier-General of the California Militia, had been convicted of a deadly assault on one Zebedee M. Quimby."

It would appear, unless there are a pair of Zebedee's, that the attack was not as deadly as reported. Some family notes indicate that Zebedee sold out his original business in Exeter NH to his brothers and went west for the goldrush, but how long he stayed wasn't known.

Interestingly, another New York Times article published Febuary 27, 1866 describes a "work of art" on display and for sale at Z M Quimby's jewelry store on Broadway near Twenty-sixth Street.

Another brief mention of a Z M Quimby is found in the 1850 Annual report of the American Institute of the City of New York -Page 44...Z M Quimby, 303 Broadway, for the best carved shell combs, superior workmanship. Silver medal.
