I've been poking about among the various Connecticut counterfeiters (Colorful Colonial Makers Part I), seeing who is in my project. I tracked down a likely Willet Larrabee (b 1705 in Norwich CT), who was the confederate of Joseph Bill. When I checked with a Larrabee family researcher (who wasn't quite willing to admit to his ancestor's transgressions) he mentioned that Willet's father Thomas -- according to family tradition based on 19th century notes -- was a silversmith working in Norwich. I find nothing in the standard references, but it sort of makes sense, if this is the right black sheep Willet. Anyone seen a Thomas mentioned or is this just wishful family thinking? IP: Logged |

If Willett turns out to be a craftsmen, this is what punishment he received on November 7, 1751. He was sentenced to stand in the pillory for half an hour, to have both ears cropped, to be branded with "R" on both cheeks with a hot iron, to be imprisoned for one month, to pay double damages to the persons injured by his counterfeit bills and the cost of prosecution, and to forfeit the remainder of his estate, both real and personal, for the use of the colony. And today, the worst he would get would be a suspended sentence. How times have changed! IP: Logged |

I think Thomas was the suspected craftsman? There was also a Thomas Larrabee in Yarmouth, Maine with similar vital statistics. IP: Logged |
