In the above photo the shape of the spoon shaft is triangular just above the juncture of the shaft to bowl. My question is this, is the triangular shape a regional feature or is it found on spoons/forks etc. throughout the country? Many thanks for any comments. I will have photos of entire spoon and mark shortly. The silversmith is supposedly FRANCKES however I cannot swear to that as the first letter/letters are mostly well worn. IP: Logged |

This is not a regional feature, but a mark of an earlier spoon, common on early downturned handled spoons. Later ones usually have a flatter shaft. IP: Logged |

As an addition to John C Jenckes' other career information, here's something else from the 1858 Transactions / Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry: Adnah Sackett " put himself an apprentice to the jewelry business, with Messrs. Jenckes (John C.) & Jastram (Mawney,) then extensive manufacturers of jewelry in Providence." Great spoon too. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 04-01-2009).] IP: Logged |

From the Transaction/Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry, William Walker Keach came to Providence as an apprenctice to the jewelry business at the manufactory of Adnah Sackett. William was born on 24 August 1812 and died on 1 April 1861. IP: Logged |
