Re: west coast auction site. Snipping is a way of life for most bidders but I strongly dislike it. My reason is as follows 1) It leaves no time for a bidder to change their mind and decide to go above their limit 2) If one sees an item for the first time and decides to bid there is no time to do a quick reference check for silversmith or any visible damage from what is frequently poor images. Needless to say there is no time to request more images. At live auctions there is always the possiblity of 'jumping in at the last moment'; and even then there exists a chance for someone else to 'jump in at the last moment'. I just like the thrill of Changing my mind and just go for it at the last moment. Snipping is boring but I realize that 'buyers for profit and well heeled collectors probably really like it. For those people 'How about giving me your website infor so I can crash your site at the next auction'. I am just kidding in case the government calls. I am rambling on because I lost another item on that west coast site this week. By the way does anyone know if the maker of those tongs was Job B Wilbore? I could not find an image of the mark for him. IP: Logged |

The first time I was ever sniped still smarts, so I learned how to do it with the best of them. For you're own defense, you'll just have to learn how to do it too. It's not that difficult, and if you really want something you can usually get it. If I get the green light from Scott, I'll explain exactly how to do for any that don't already know. One second bids are common for me, but I've never made it to zero which according to an early expert in the "game" is conceivable. So besting the sniping services is not difficult either. Rest easy; I haven't done much on that site for some time and rarely went after the really premimium items. IP: Logged |

I find it soo distasteful that I have no desire to try it. I still enjoy REAL auctions as there are actual, warm blooded human beings to interact with. Besides who would want to sit in front of a mass of glass, silicon and plastic whose only warmth is the heat generated by a mass of electronic components when you could be outside under a sunny and BLUE SKY. Thanks for the offer but I will hold to my guns on this one. And when I was young I swore I would never become one of those grumpy old men. IP: Logged |

In truth at "real" auctions, those folks know how to snipe too. Sniping is not an online phenomenon. It's just not possible to be as subtle with a computer. The idea of being sporting is admirable. I personally take great stock in it but don't always live up to the same. My hat's off to you. (Too many cliches right)! IP: Logged |

At my age cliches are the only thing I can toy with anymore. IP: Logged |
