Any ideas?
This auction just ended and I am questioning it. When the image of the picture back is enhanced and enlarged to 3500 mp it appears as though the bowl is married to the handle. Why, look at the end of the drop just below the birdcage. It appears to have some hammer marks as well as some scratches as though it were being readied for silver soldering. Am I getting paranoid/extremely suspicious of anything on that website? The spoon is marked for Wiltberger. IP: Logged |

It is not the first American example I have seen, however it is well to be cautious when something this rare comes up. Note the feet of the birdcage are undisturbed and should have been disrupted if there were a joining there. Look at the enlarged view of the top of the bowl, and the edges appear uninterrupted. THe lighting, however, does not allow a clear enough view of the deep end of the bowl. You would almost have to feel it to see how smooth it is. On first glance I saw no reason to question it, but one should never buy what they feel is a questionable object without a return privilege. IP: Logged |

Swarter The ball feet appear to indicate a triple stamping but that may be just a bounce of the die. Whenever a rare item comes up I would much rather 'see the item in person'. This was one of those items where I was "maybe it is and maybe it is not" but I would rather err on the side of caution. IP: Logged |
