A few days ago, Swift Barnes, the former owner of ONC and the man who got me started in this career, came by to see us and brought some old spoons he had for us to polish. They are coin spoons and I looked at the stamps on the back to se who made them. One large spoon was by J Moulton. The other names were unfamiliar to me and I thought I might find out here a bit about those makers.
Two of the spoons are marked A.Wakefield and four are marked S.B.Cole. These six are teaspoons and are aditionally stamped "Greatfalls". Does anyone know what that refers to other than the city in Montana? The last spoon was marked J.Burritt & son with "Ithaca" stamped right after the name.
Any information you can provide would be most appreciated.

Thank you WEV for that information. Although Mr. Barnes did not ask about that, I'll pass the information on to him, as I'm sure he'll be very interested.

The A Wakefield is Albert Wakefield who was a jeweller and watchmaker in Great Falls about the same time as S B Cole. Both were born in New Hampshire in about 1820.

I have looked into Wakefield in the past, but have not tracked down his line. He was partner with James Woodward in the 1860s as WAKEFIELD & WOODWARD. He was dead by the 1880 census, survived by his widow Rhoda.

I'd say Albert Wakefield died about 1867. He paid federal income tax in 1866 and James J Woodward was listed on his own in 1868. Also Albert's wife is listed as a widow in the 1870 U S Federal Census for Somersworth. Along with his wife he was survived by his daughter Mary A.

Thank you for the further information about Albert Wakefield. Though I live in New Hampshire, not very far from Somersworth, I've never heard of the town of Great Falls. Perhaps it is an old name for a present day section of Somersworth. I'll have to check into that.

Yes, it was merged into Somersworth (which was originally named Slingo).

During the nineteenth century, the two names were often given together. If I understand correctly, they were in the same vicinity, and Somersworth eventually eclipsed Great Falls.

My reply was kind of redundant here. I apologize.

Elbridge Adell, age 22, born in Maine, was listed as an apprentice jeweler in Albert Wakefield's household in the 1860 U S Federal Census for Somersworth, New Hampshire. Elbridge later shows up in Lewiston, Maine City Directories as a watchmaker.
