Augustus D McLoud was listed as an eighteen year old watchmaker in the household of Abraham B Hall in the 1850 U S Federal Census for Geneva, New York.

A twenty-eight year old New York born Augustus McLeod appears in the 1860 U S Federal Census for Chicago, Illinois with the occupation jeweler.

In the 1867-8 Ontario County Business Directory in Phelps, New York, he was listed as a jeweler with the business name Augustus McLeod & Co, (partnered with Stanley A Banta).

Augustus appears in the 1870 and 1880 U S Federal Census's for Phelps, New York as a jeweler.

Augustus lived into the 1920's.

Augustus's parents were Hubbard McLeod and Experience Dickinson.

He was born 5 Feb 1831 and married Frances Mary Sayre on 19 Oct 1865. She was the grand niece of the silversmiths Caleb and Paul.

Theodore M. Banta (a very distant relative of Stanley A. Banta) notes in his book, Sayre Family: Lineage of Thomas Sayre, a Founder of Southampton (DeVinne Press, 1901), that McLeod also worked in Kentucky, but he's not mentioned in Boultinghouse.

The 1850's while he was out West would make the most sense for time spent in Kentucky by Augustus. He was back in Phelps living with his mother by 1862 according to a city directory for that year.

Sometime in the 1880's Augustus was in a stove lining and firebrick works business, McLeod & Henry Co, with his younger brother Harvey S and a Horace H Henry in Troy, New York. Augustus still lived in Phelps most likely all of the time he was associated with that business. The McLeods were a merchant family. Harvey was very successful in business in Troy, and Augustus no doubt shared some of that wealth.

A correction to my first post in this thread, in 1850 Augustus D McLeod was in Seneca, New York. I misread the enumerator's handwriting.
