A little added information about the above named jeweler, listed in Wilson's  New York City Copartnership Directory March 1879---Volume XXVII as Churchill, Lewis & Co (William W Churchill, Charles M Lewis, & Frederick Wessel) 180 B'way.

Here is a basic chronology of the firm's evolution:

1831 to 1848 -- William Bennett North and William Allen Churchill as NORTH & CHURCHILL
1848 t0 1850 -- William Allen Churchill and James Stanley as CHURCHILL & STANLEY
1850 to 1853 -- William Allen Churchill, James Stanley and Dewitt Clinton Pond as CHURCHILL, STANLEY & Co.
1854 to 1856 -- William Allen Churchill, James Stanley, Charles Mason Lewis, and Charles Warner as CHURCHILL, STANLEY & Co.
1856 to 1863 -- William Allen Churchill, James Stanley and Charles Mason Lewis as CHURCHILL, STANLEY & Co.
1863 to 1871 -- William Allen Churchill, Charles Mason Lewis and E. B. Dana as CHURCHILL, DANA & Co.
1871 to 1874 -- William Allen Churchill, Charles Mason Lewis, William Walcott Churchill, and Frederick Wessel as CHURCHILL, LEWIS & Co.
1875 to 1885 -- Charles Mason Lewis, William W. Churchill and Frederick Wessel as CHURCHILL, LEWIS & Co. (with the estate of William Allen Churchill retaining a part interest)
1885 to 1886 -- Charles Mason Lewis and Frederick Wessel as CHURCHILL, LEWIS & WESSEL
after 1886 -- Frederick Wessel and Charles J. Leward as LEWIS, WESSEL & LEWARD

From the beginning, the various partnerships maintained sales offices in New York City, but the factory remained in New Britain. This is a picture of the employees of CHURCHILL & DANA taken in 1871

Neat picture! Didn't see the Churchill, Lewis & Co partnership in your earlier list, so it seemed worth posting with the reference.

Dewitt C Pond is listed in the 1850 U S Federal Census for New Britain, Connecticut in Artemas E Hart's household. Surprisingly, at least so far, Hart does not fit into any of these partnerships.

Hart had apprenticed with William B. North and may have stayed on into the Churchill partnerships as a journeyman/worker.
