An auction was held in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 5, 2009 for the above listed item. The auction estimate was $300,000 to $400,000 dollars. The item description read:
The item did not sell. The reason possibly being that there are no known records of the presentation and Tiffany has no record of it. I was going to take money out of the petty cash account and go buy it but I awoke from that dream. The portrait is that of Luke Kent Jr. an Ohio silversmith in Cincinnati. This was in the auction as well. It seems as though the portrait along with portraits of his wife his mother and his father were in the same auction. This happening is a rarity and I do not use the rarity word lightly. IP: Logged |

It seems a bit ungainly with that small base. IP: Logged |

The inscription is dated 1864. According to Carpenter's book, the marks are correct for 1854-70, made for Tiffany by John C. Moore Co., so the time is right for the piece. Maybe you should have gone for it. IP: Logged |

Actually it is 1861 -- those long serif 1's can be deceptive, especially when viewed from a slight skew. There are 33 stars, so it was engraved before January 1861, when Kansas became a state, though the inscription is dated March 4, which seems a bit odd. The first one in 1861 looks just like the second one and nothing like the four just prior to it. IP: Logged |

If it wasn't for the base, I'd 'a' had it. IP: Logged |

The paintings went quite cheap, even with the condition issues. IP: Logged |

But they did make the auction estimate. IP: Logged |
