No, thanks though. No questions at this time. Comments welcome of course. These are just a pair of spoons that I find particularly attractive and that may be of interest to some. Here's the back side of them:

Very nice find. Correct me if I am off the mark; later period Coffinends. Possibly 1810 time frame. Coffinends started appx. 1800 and transitioned to this style around 1805 to 1810 finally losing favor around that last date. The elongated coffin has been suggested by some to indicate a Southern origin. [This message has been edited by argentum1 (edited 08-10-2009).] IP: Logged |

Thank you argentum1. Maybe the shoulder and incised drop on these spoons would have as much to do with dating them as the style of the handle? IP: Logged |

Sugar loaf shoulders and incised drops have been around for quite some time. These are transitional coffinends with Fiddleback handles. Fiddlebacks were introduced by the French in the 1700's then became popular in England. After the English the style appeared in America. I have found that for every two questions I ask there are five more waiting to perplex me. The reason I suggest around 1810 is the coffinend trasitioning to a fiddleback. A nice find congratulations. You're right. The progression of spoon styles including coffin end handles is something that I cannot begin to explain. These spoons however are just a pleasure to look at. Their size is interesting, the slight bevelling at the edges of the coffin end and the perfectly round bowls speak highly of the craftsmanship of the maker/makers. Thank you again. IP: Logged |
