These were recently auctioned off. They are the portraits of David Kinsey and his wife. He was a Cincinnati, Ohio silversmith ca. 1830

Wow. I never thought I would see the face of someone who made one of the spoons in my silver drawer!

(Would he have made a teaspoon himself?)

Did they exceed there auction estimates by much? The last time they sold which was not all that long ago, I think they made there estimate and not a lot more. I'm not really interested in knowing exactly what they made. Just curious if somebody found a better venue for them.

Then again is your recent auction the same one that had a posting about maybe six months ago?

Polly, He was working under his own name then his brother joined him. They had a large factory, I think it had about five floors. It is possible that he made it himself but I rather doubt it. I will post a photo of the factory later. It is actually an advertisement image. Sorry, I goofed as it is a photo of the Duhme factory and not of the Kinsey shop. That is what happens when one gets senile.

Bascall, the auction was in Cincinnati so it might well be the same one.

Thanks argentum1, that sounds about right. It is interesting to see the faces of these gentlemen and their wives too for that matter.

These evidently sold right under my nose. I just came across this post today. I'm working on a book that will be published in 2014 and an exhibition (summer 2014)on Cincinnati silver. I would love to locate these portraits. Is it possible to find out what auciton house they sold through? I've searched our auction databases available here and have not been able to find anything.

Nevermind...It just occured to me why the female sitter looked so familar. These are actually portraits of Luke Kent Jr. and his wife. Luke Kent, Jr. was another Cincinnati silversmith.

Glad to hear that you are having an exhibit and book on Cincinnati silversmiths coming out. I look forward to seeing it.
Did any St. Louis silversmiths try to retail silver in Cincinnati? I think Duhme had a retail operation in St. Louis but I am not aware of any going the other way.
