Above is a goblet with the mark of William Gale and Son and a date mark of 1852. It has a milled band around the top that is a little unusual - the rim is not a smooth line, but goes up and down with the design of the band. I do not think that our milled band thread has one just like this one. The goblet has a short stem, but the bowl is the size normally used for water. I think I was attracted to it first as the inscription is to a child from his great grandmother. Most of the ones I have seen have been from parents or grandparents and it is nice to see great grandparents getting into the act. IP: Logged |

I am not certain that this can be classified as a 'milled band'. That however is best left to others here as I am not certain of what to call it. I would think 'lip treatment'? Someone please give us a sort of definitive answer. Thanks all. IP: Logged |

It is a cast border, probably cast in 3 or 4 sections and then soldered to the rim. The rim is then filed down to conform to the flow of the applied castings. Interestingly the milled band on the foot of the goblet might be worth a close up? [This message has been edited by agleopar (edited 10-07-2009).] IP: Logged |

This specific milled band (on the foot) is already found on Roman silver. IP: Logged |

Thanks argentum1 and agleopar for the information about the rim. The base is shown above and I think is a modified egg and dart pattern. I think this pattern is fairly common. IP: Logged |

The goblet has the William Gale and Son mark with their date mark of 1852. They were large manufacturers and may have made the milled band and the cast band. IP: Logged |
