If someone has the book handy, does Hinde have anything more to say of the father and son past what is in Belden and Ensko? IP: Logged |

I have Hindes, plus the new(ish) book from the Biggs Museum of Art. What do you need to know? All the sources seem to agree that James and Jesse used the same marks, and that the only way to make a firm attribution is by style. James died in 1808, so all the fiddle pattern pieces can be logically attributed to Jesse. Jesse lived from 1793 to 1874, but it seems as though he must have left the business long before his death. The Biggs museum has a photo of Jesse in his later years, sadly undated. I can send you photos of the entries in both books if you want. Just let me know, Brent IP: Logged |

Thanks Brent. Sounds about the same as I have found. Belden mentions several advertisements by James; does Hinde give the text of them? IP: Logged |

WEV, I sent you some pictures of the entries in Hindes and the new book; did you get my e-mail? If not, please let me know. Brent IP: Logged |

I did indeed and just haven't had a chance to email. It does add a few bits to what I had, so thanks for the trouble taken. I will get back to you on the other matter, which is in the affirmative. IP: Logged |
