Forced inside by three days of pounding rain, I started fiddling about with a graphing program called GenoPro. I took a snippet of my tree project, the Fletcher and Bennett families of Philadelphia, and added the partnership (red) and business (green) connections between the various members.
Unfortunately, our image size limitations make it hard to get any more elaborate with the information presented or lay out a more polished presentation, but I think it still makes a pretty interesting visual web of activity. IP: Logged |

Are you doing another rebuild? I couldn't see the connection between the Gardiners and the Verons and went to your site to check and found your indexes by occupation are down. I got to the Gardiner pages through the List of Surnames, so they are still there somewhere, but I still didn't see any connection. IP: Logged |

Geez -- how embarrassing. I build those indexes manually and introduced a small glitch in one of the search and replace routines. Thank you for bringing it to my attention; should be fixed now. IP: Logged |

And now that I look at the picture, I see I left off Tim Vernon, a clerk with FLETCHER & GARDNER, who Thomas Charles later tried to set up as a fancy goods merchant in New York. The rain seems to have waterlogged my brain. IP: Logged |

another little experiment, but one that will definitely not fit our forum page, so I'll have to use a link: This is just two lines of a pair of prolific families working in the Attleboro MA area. As before, I have stripped out all the uninteresting siblings (no offense to any descendants that may happen by). To further complicate the picture, the two Blackington girls who married the brothers John and Horace Tifft were also 1st cousins and great-grand neices of George at the top of the page. Putting in their two lines would add another 23 jewelers, watchmakers, and silversmiths. Unfortunately, the tree gets so complicated at that point, its just not worthwhile. Well, as usual, I couldn't resist. I am getting a little better with the program and after a good trimming of sprigs and shifting things about, I got all three Blackinton lines into one tree: As a bonus, it adds in the Hequembourg family, a connection I had not noticed before, for a total of 112 silversmiths and jewelers. It looks useful; the first one is readable, but the second is too wide to read on the screen, although you could print it in landscape mode and it might be readable - or you could tape two pages together. At maximum magnification on my screen it is too blurry. Is there a provision in the software that would allow you to rotate that tree 90 degrees to the left and then rotate the boxes 90 degrees right so that they could be read upright, so one could then scroll down the page and have it readable on the screen? I was afraid it would do that with some monitors and browsers. On firefox, it is scalable and comes up crisp. In IE, it enlarges fine, but is very pixilated. I will investigate your suggestion. IP: Logged |

It appears it is not an option. IP: Logged |

Very impressive! I use IE8 and it's very clear at 400% magnification. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

A little more playing with the original Fletcher//Bennett essay gives a nice useful map -- see the bottom of Thomas' page Click a rectangle and go to that person's page. But this is veering away from silver, so I'll give it a rest and get some weeding done. IP: Logged |

Been fiddling among the Blackingtons again and thought I'd see how many of Pentecost and Ann (Pedrick) Blackington's direct descendents were in the trades: Edwin Jacob Bacon-- Husband of 4th Great-Granddaughter [This message has been edited by wev (edited 01-28-2012).] IP: Logged |
