A pleasant surprise to see an early American piece of silver get such national press. Seems a Kierstede Punch bowl just sold at auction for $5.9 million. Fred IP: Logged |

The auction results are available online from Sotheby's Sale # N08608 22-23 January 2010. There are a number of very nice pieces all of which I cannot afford. IP: Logged |

Are we not allowed to post pictures? I have a picture of the Kierstede bowl, which I fondled ecstatically at the auction preview (figuring I'd never get that close again). This is not my favorite kind of object, and yet it is mesmerizing--size, condition, and general opulence. I know the name of the buyer, and fervently hope it is headed to a museum (if not now, then someday). IP: Logged |

A friend in Boston is living in the top floor of the of the Loring/Greenough house (it is a museum but they have a tenant to keep a presence in it) I have told her to go look in the well to see if they forgot anything... I can not find the size on line, 4 pounds acording to one of the articles, so 50ish ounces (I think?) but does anyone know the measurments? - Thanks. IP: Logged |

Would this be a record for a piece of American silver? I think it is, by a large margin if I'm not mistaken. Anyone know for sure? Brent IP: Logged |

It is reported as such. I can't think of anything that even comes close. IP: Logged |

Ulysses, sorry to have missed you at the preview. It was a MAGNIFICENT piece, and certainly created a "buzz" around Antiques Week. IP: Logged |

I'm trying to think of any American silver that might be worth more. Probably the Sons of Liberty bowl, and Philip Syng's inkstand at Independence Hall. That's about it. Brent IP: Logged |

Does anyone know if it went to a private collector or to a museum? Fred IP: Logged |

That must have been quite the spirited competition at the end of Day 1; I see they were expecting it to go for about a tenth of what it ended up. Lovely. I trust the new owner's having a cup of punch from it to celebrate! [That's just to make wev wince. ;> ] IP: Logged |

A rhetorical question: would you rather have the $6M punch bowl, or the $104M Giacometti? IP: Logged |

The Giacometti don't hold much liquor. . . IP: Logged |

And I would never want to have those skinny Giaometti people around my house-it would make me feel like I should be on a diet! IP: Logged |
