[26-0851] Hello and Happy New Year to all! Sorry I haven't been active lately, but now here's a mark that I can't find anywhere. It's on a coin silver teaspoon I've purchased: down turned pointed tip, bright cut decoration on the handle, V-drop, 5 1/2" long. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance! IP: Logged |

Thank you, wev - I guess I didn't hunt very thoroughly or carefully! But someone in this forum always comes through! IP: Logged |

Correction: Van Beuren was born in Hackensack, but worked first in New York City (1790-1792), then Newark (1792-1794), then back in New York City (1795-c 1825). I shouldn't answer questions before the second pot of coffee. . . IP: Logged |

wev, is that a known mark for van Beuren? It's not one I remember seeing attributed, although it certainly seems likely. But when I read the description -- pointed handle, V-drop -- my first thought was it might be continental rather than American. Not that it couldn't be, of course, but that's a form where I often see continental pieces mistaken for American. IP: Logged |

A photo of the mark is shown in William's Silversmiths of New Jersey. Visualizing form without a photograph is tricky, and subject to interpretation. which is why we always ask for pictures of both the piece and the mark. To me, the description sounds typical of the Old English / Irish Pointed End style bright-cut spoons commonly made here in the 1785 - 1820 period, while to someone else, it could sound Scandinavian. Sorry - here's a photo of the spoon front: It definitely strikes me as being American made, for what that's worth . . . IP: Logged |

Yes, I'd say so too -- looks more American than continental, but that's a point that always sets off alarms in my mind. And I had somehow spaced and looked in the Delaware book instead of New Jersey -- where of course he wasn't listed.... IP: Logged |

I hate to say someone is deceitful but I happened to be one of the bidders on this piece. This piece was on auction # 7377776389 and went off today Jan-03-06 13:43:09 PST, several hours before your first posting saying that you had already bought this piece. I suggest that you buy the necessary reference books, in order to do your own research. I wouldn't mind it as much but you have clearly deceived everyone into thinking you owned this piece, which at the time you had not.The information on this site is free of charge to people that are interested in silver but not to deceitful people. Get a grip. Tad IP: Logged |

And the photo is one of the listing photos, cropped and color adjusted to disguise its origin. IP: Logged |
