Sitting here, waiting for the next rain storm to arrive and fending off the advances of my cat Emily Binks, I have been trying to figure out what to do next. My little genealogy project has now reached an unwieldy size in the whole and the stripped down version I maintain on the site appears more and more to be a compilation of disjointed bits, rather than the study of interconnectedness that enticed me into starting all this in the first place. I briefly contemplated doing a complete build of the whole tree, then figured out that the 300,000+ files would take more than 2 days to upload, to say nothing of the weeks of manual editing needed to get them ready. I don't know that I have the energy to undertake that sort of chore and am not at all sure if it would clear the waters or just add another truckload of mud to the mix. Given the sort of questions and feedback I generally get, most folks use the site as a ready means of identifying something they found clearing out granny's house or garnering info for an auction blurb or both. I suspect these folks wouldn't care, if they even noticed a difference. Looking at the ip addresses, I get a good number of academics stopping by, but since they have all thought it serves best to remain mute, I have no way of telling what they might be thinking (if they are). The denizens of this forum are of a different sort entirely, of course, and I would not hesitate to step up to the task, if I thought it would be of interest. Would it be? Or is there something else that would be of better use and utility? Should I abandon my conceit and begin adding all the many unrelated makers? Or start a whole new project -- makers without family ties? More charts? More graphs? Cute little emoticons sprinkling over the pages like the rains that just arrived? Or should I just admit I am tired and take a nap? IP: Logged |

The internet is full of lurkers who flit from site to site without acknowledging their presence, so it is hard to know who is using a site for which purposes. I have seen references to your project everywhere from ebay to genealogies, so I think the answer to your questions is all of the above! Silver people want maker IDs and maybe some biographical info, genealogists could care less about the silver, and historians would want both. Unless you charge admission or at least require registration to use it, you will have to rely on self satisfaction and the few plaudits you get from internet acquaintances. We appreciate your efforts at least. IP: Logged |

Oh, I am well reconciled to the vicissitudes and vagrancies of internet life, though it would be nice if they spelled my name right. What I am really after is some inspiration as to where to go next. I am sitting on a decade's packet of data that might be assembled and disassembled in many ways, but which one would serve best? Or is that a question that can't be answered except on a purely personal basis? I have worked with this information for so long and looked at it from so many different angles that it is hard for me to stand back and see it in the whole -- too much of the tree and not enough the forest. WEV, Your fantastic American Silversmiths project is a very personal project that you have generously shared with the world. In addition to the project, you have shared other resources and insights such as the Index of City Directories. I find myself lurking at your site often. This weekend we were combing through your site. Partly to do some quick research and then looking for something like a missing mark to share with you. So I am one of your lurkers and should have been more communicative. We picked up some coin spoons and we were hoping one might prove helpful for your project.
I hope you are able to reconcile things such that you continue to share this monumental and truly inspired project with the rest of us.

Thank you, Scott. I'm always glad to add new or better marks -- send them along at your leisure. I don't know about an Ann Smith, but Alvin Smith started out in Port Chester, then moved to Bedford NY c 1850, where he established a well-regarded jewelry store and served in various city offices. I have run up pages for the full tree, then stripped out all unmarried children who are not of interest. That reduced the build to 82,796 files. Unfortunately, my server seems to have a maximum directory size limit and breaking up the pages into several sub-directories makes it impractical to build the various indexes that I consider more important, so things will stay as they are for now. We're enjoying sunny days again, so maybe I'll get inspired. IP: Logged |
