The sheaf of wheat and basket of flowers patterns above both have an eagle manufacturer's mark that is attributed by John McGrew is his book, "Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver" to an unidentified Philadelphia manufacturer. The eagle has a shield on its breast that is usually difficult to see. This eagle has been seen on 46 different retailers by McGrew. The basket is unusual as it has vertical and horizontal reeds in the basket portion whereas other baskets have cross hatched reeds. The sheaf of wheat is unusual as it has three implements with the wheat whereas most others have only two tools. IP: Logged |

The basket of flowers is on a pair of sugar tongs while the wheat is on a teaspoon. I posted the sugar tongs some time ago, but I have not been able to fine them on the Forum pages. The tongs have the eagle and William Huntington's mark and the spoon is marked with Thomas F. Albright mark and the eagle. Albright was from Philadelphia while Huntington was from Alabama. Both retailers are listed in McGrew.s book. IP: Logged |

Thanks Swarter - for some reason my searching for this thread does not work. Also I did not mean that Huntington and Albright only retailed items. Huntington was a silversmith although I suspect that by the time these tongs were made he mostly retailed items. I do not know anything about Albright. IP: Logged |
