This is my very first post, I hope I don't sound stupid. This weekend I bought several coin silver spoons from the same family. Four have Houtchkiss & schreuder's mark c. 1857-1864 ("H" in a circle, "&" in diamond, S in Circle, and eagle in circle), also have "S.J.CHILD" stamped into them. The front of these are engraved "M.G.Fuller". The other four are stamped "S.J.CHILD" in a rectangle and the "PREMIUM" in a seperate rectangle. the Front side of these in feather script are engraved "AMF". I haven't been able to find out anything on S.J. Child, though I have made some headway on the Fuller family. Any help & information would be greatly appreciated. If pictures are needed I will try an figure that out, I just though one step at a time. thanks. IP: Logged |

Hotchkiss & Schreuder are the manufacturers and Sylvester J. Child is the jewelry retailer who sold the spoons in New York. You will find out that a lot of silver has a manufacturers mark as well as the retailers mark stamped on the piece. Thanks, Tad IP: Logged |

Hi and welcome! Yes, photos are very important. There is a helpful link at the top of each page on how to post them - please be sure to go by it step by step and you should have no problem. Also, if you might tell us a bit about your interest in learning more about these, that would likely lead to a better response. IP: Logged |

I'll Try and get the pictures to you soon. I'm trying to find out more about S.J. CHILD who made the second set of spoons(David Hotchkiss & Andrew B. Schreuder's mark is not on these as you will see once I can get the photo's posted...waiting for the bateries to recharge).I realize many manufacturers sold to retailers, and many retailers made thier own goods. I just haven't been able to find out anything on Child. Thanks again. Will get those photos ASAP. LIZ IP: Logged |

Tad you are really REALLY GREAT!!! A freind from Albany called tonight after hunting at the library with simular info! this is so Cool! Sylvester's sister Henrietta Eliza Child (dec 19,1836 -d. mar 3, 1923) m. Levant Bedell (b. 1837 -d. 1922). Levant was also a Jeweler / Silversmith. Apparently it looks like Sylvester's father, Sylvester Troup Child & Eliza (Carpenter ?) had 11 children! What I love is when this silver begins to tell the story of the past. I want to thank you so much for this information. I know it must have been hard to find. Thanks Liz. IP: Logged |
