Hello, jersey - I've been out of touch for a little while, so forgive me for the late reply. My family's Hurd teapot (stolen on Memorial Day weekend 1972, as I remember) was a vertical oval form (if that makes sense) - the vertical not fluted like similarly shaped Revere teapots but flat, with engraving which I don't remember, a straight spout, and I think a wooden handle and finial. It may have originally had a small footed stand but that was gone when we had the teapot. The more I investigate, though, the more I am inclined to think that it was not by Jacob but one of his sons (the form was too late for Jacob); so probably Benjamin or Nathaniel. The mystery deepens! Is there any written record to indicate that this pot could have been made by one of the Hurds? Memory, unfortunately for all of us, can be unreliable. The style of pot - if as described, straight sided, oval, with straight spout - was predominantly a feature of the 1790's; to attribute it to Benjamin Hurd, who died in 1781 (he was the last of the Hurd silversmiths - Jacob died in 1758 and Nathaniel in 1777), would be a stretch and is further unlikely as he seems to have left little silver besides spoons. Could you have been thinking of Benjamin Burt instead? He, at least, lived until 1805, and could have made such a pot. There are, of course, many other potential candidates, but for some reason Burts and Hurds seem to get confused - perhaps because of their one-syllable names and Massachusetts location. I might add that, if in fact, it did carry Jacob Hurd's mark, it would have been spurious - Hurd silver has been faked in the past.
