On our way to my wife’s 50th high school reunion we stopped at a friend’s house. She collects coin silver and had several unusual pieces and one is pictured above. It is a spoon holder that has slots for 24 spoons and has the mark for Bailey, Kettell and Chapman and the mark coin. This was a firm in Boston during the 1850s.

I am not that familiar with spoon holders and wonder why one would want one for 24 spoons.

Would this have been used in a serving line for the simple purpose of holding spoons for the guests?

The way I have seen spoon holders used was for casual access. The spoon holder sat on a table where people would come for a coffee and tea. The drinker took a spoon from the holder, stirred cream in, wiped the spoon on an apron or napkin and returned it to the holder.

Really nice one your friend has. It would also work with a tea set.

Thanks Dale for the information. I did see another site that said rotating spoon holders became popular during the 1870s. This seems to be a form only popular in the states.
