[19-1274] Hi there once again.. I just picked this up from a friend. As always, my first question after commenting on the quality was, "Why don't you give it to your children?" The answer, as is usual was, "The kids don't want it." "Did you try 'guilting' them into it?..Its an 18th century piece and should stay in the family". I got an eye roll, and a sigh. "Yes, I tried, but they just don't want to be bothered with more stuff." "Where is your family from?", I asked.. Any way, here is the ladle.. 14 " long, late 18th century, with a name that looks like J. RICE or something close. The shape of the cartouche should be a clue, but my research thus far (including Mr. Voss's excellent site) has yielded nothing. Here are photos of the piece and two of the mark. Thanks for your assistance. Marc IP: Logged |

The mark is that of Joseph Rice, who was a silversmith in Baltimore MD in the 1780's and 1790's. According to his biographical blurb in Ensko, he also lived in Savannah, GA from approximately 1801-1808, when he died there. IP: Logged |

Joseph Rice silversmith is known more as a clock maker. Beautiful ladle. The book is entitled Dixie Clockmakers.
