This fiddle and thread fork, dating to 1848, was part of Julia Dent's wedding silver when she married the 26-year-old Ulysses S. Grant.

It has some pseudo marks on it with a D in a square--but the retailer's (?) name GEO. DOTY stamped on it.

Anyone know anything about Doty? Was he just a retailer? This should be from somewhere near St. Louis, as that's where the wedding was--but it could have come from the groom's family, hence southern Ohio.

George Doty son of Ellis Doty was born at Canandaigua NY 6 Oct 1818. His family moved to Detroit in 1826. Shortly afterwards he went to Buffalo where he learned the jeweler's trade. He returned to Detroit and formed a partnership with Edmund Kearsley on Jefferson Avenue which only lasted a short time. When the Canadian rebellion commenced in 1837, he sympathized with the patriots and was a participator in the battle on Fighting Island. He returned to Detroit and resumed his trade. He later took up mining, which is his given occupation in the 1880 census.

I have seen his mark both incised and incuse, the later including the word "Maker", but accompanied by the same pseudo marks your fork carries.

Just to fill in with a little less significant information, George Doty is listed as a jeweler in the 1870 Detroit census, a clock repairer in the 1875 Directoy, and as late as 1900, he is listed in directories as an assayer.

Detroit actually makes perfect sense--because one of the Grants' first postings after they're married is Detroit...so maybe they acquired the fork(s) after they moved to Michigan, which was a brief but happy time in their early marriage.
