[19-1280] Here is a salver (a footed tray) marked by Lincoln & Foss, Boston, and dated 1857. About a foot across.
Here is a detail of the engraving, the W.S.N. being a member of the Nichols family of Rochester, NY.

The Gothic letter L is discussed in this Wendt & Canfield Butter dish thread. IP: Logged |

Ah, but there's no resolution to the dilemma on that thread, either. Ferdinand Lemme, is the only option. But we'll see--it's clearly the maker, whoever he is...I think it's just an L. It's like the London date letter for 1847-47. IP: Logged |

I was looking over the old thread. Ferdinand is cited there as the partner in Rogers, Wendt & Lemme based on the Rogers bio in Silver in America. This is in error; the gentleman was Charles Lemme, a manufacturing jeweler and engraver of Boston. He is noted as a partner in the 1857 and 1858 city directory. He had left the firm by 1860, when he is listed with Benjamin Shreve Price in Lemme & Price at 143 Washington. He is not listed after that. There are no mentions that I have found of a Frederick in Boston directories or censuses. IP: Logged |

I haven't looked into these two gentlemen in depth, but for a start, I can say that Ferdinand and Charles Lemme had an 1865 belt buckle patent and Charles is listed as a jewelry manufacturer in the 1870 San Francisco census. IP: Logged |
