I don't have privileges for the early American forum, where some interested folk might be congregating, so I hope they find this.... Today, February 17, is the 250th anniversary of the death of Jacob Hurd. I am planning to pull out my Hurd cann, fill it with ale, and drink a toast -- and urge all like-minded folk to do likewise in a vessel of their choosing! IP: Logged |

I think Mr. Hurd might like it if you fill his cann with mead. Anyone have a good quick mead recipe? IP: Logged |

The only "quick" method is to go to Trader Joe's and buy a bottle. I'll stick with beer. Here's a few others to add to the toast: born: IP: Logged |

WEV, I expect you could generate a list such that near every day we could honor the birth or death of a long list of silversmiths. Since my elbow isn't arthritic, and I am feeling a little dry, I am all for it. IP: Logged |

Yes! And then you can publish the annual Silver Calendar! Mead...hmmm...alas, fresh out. I confess I didn't give a lot of thought to the suitable beverage. Rum maybe? What the heck did people pour into canns and tankards besides ale? IP: Logged |

Only about 2300 names, but here you go You'll have to find something else to toast on 22 August and 07 December. IP: Logged |

Very impressive bit of cataloging. We need August 22... or I suppose we could save that day as the day to raise a glass to all the undiscovered smiths. IP: Logged |

Mr. Hurd and myself have one thing in common. We've both sold silver marked with his name. I sold a spoon that had a few condition problems, two serious breaks and bends in the handle, a crack in the bowl in the area of the drop, and substantial wear to the tip and edge of the bowl. Nevertheless, it went for what I consider a substantial sum. After all it was made by Jacob Hurd. It is now in the hands of a very pleased collector. IP: Logged |

I do, actually. If I get over a work deadline in the next few days, this might be my excuse to figure out how to post. I can report that Mr. Hurd was duly toasted. But because I was out of ale as well as mead and don't like rum all that much, he was toasted with a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I suspect I made history with that -- has CNdP ever been drunk from a Hurd cann? I don't know. But I'd like to think he'd approve. IP: Logged |

If I had a Hurd cann, I suspect I would take many oportunities to drink from it. I have used my diminuative Hurd teaspoon to stir my tea even though it has a tear in the bowl. I do not have the heart to try and repair it. Access to a micro laser has made this sort of repair much easier and with less chance of damage to the original piece. Fred IP: Logged |
