I came across this tablespoon. I had a note that it had come from the Norwich CT area and may be William Gurley, but it seems a touch too early (he arrived there from Ireland via NY in 1800). There is not much resemblance to his confirmed mark:

I don't recognize the mark on the spoon, but I don't believe the first mark is actually Gurley's. It is absolutely identical to that of William B. Guthrie, who worked as a silversmith from 1799-1822 in Mercersburg, PA. The attribution is based on spoons found in Mercersburg that have local histories. I have several examples (of uncertain history), both with and without the chip on the top. Reference is Craftsmen of Franklin County, Penna. 1784-1884, by Wm. S. Bowers. 1984. IP: Logged |
