I recently bought a nice coin silver punch ladle marked "PATENT 1866" and an additional mark that I can't make head or tails of. Hoping someone will recognize it. Here's the ladle, with a phone for scale (for those of you who remember how big phones used to be):

Three views of the mark, the first with the "PATENT 1866" also showing, and the other two from opposite orientations, since I can't tell which way is upside down:

It's a heavy ladle with a beaded cylindrical handle, a fancy cast finial, and traces of gilding left on the bowl, which has a little engraving in the mid-19th century style. It's professionally done but not extraordinarily fine, and the finial has what I take to be a casting flaw on the bottom, where it won't show. Close up of the finial:

The design/pattern look like it could be George Sharp. Try using a toothbrush to better clean out the marks. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Scott! I did use a toothbrush--there's no gunk left in the marks, just a little bit of tarnish in the corners. What looks like gunk is just silver and shadows. Shall I try taking some more photos? IP: Logged |

Here's an item that can be searched on google now: Circa 1870, Philadelphia. Gothic Revival berry spoon by George Sharp. Excellent condition It goes along with what Scott has suggested. IP: Logged |

Looks like you're right. I found photos online from a 2007 auction for a George Sharp ladle with the exact same finial (minus the casting flaw) and beaded handle. Thank you. IP: Logged |

You're right, Bascall. That looks like the same handle, and the same illegible mark. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Here's an earlier thread about George Sharp and his balls. Hm, that came out wrong. I mean, a thread about George Sharp and his flatware patterns with heavy round finials. Patent 1863 G.S. -- George Sharp marks? IP: Logged |

And a search for "George Sharp patent 1866" turns up plenty of other examples of serving pieces with the same handle. I wish my ladle had mice and squirrels and blackberries and bees and ladies' faces, like some of the other pieces, but I'm not complaining. IP: Logged |

Looking at that "casting flaw" again, I'm starting to think it's a big blob of solder. In which case, perhaps there once was a squirrel or lady or fly or something on my ladle after all! IP: Logged |
