Hello Everyone,

I just got a coin silver salver and am looking for confirmation/additional information of what we have been able to decipher so far.

Here is the salver:

Close-up of the engraving:

There is a mark that looks very similar to that of Theodore Evans & Co. which means it was made in New York circa 1855-1865. The "T" is rubbed but it looks "right". The date in the diamond is probably 1858.

Finally there is a retailers mark for Spencer & Teague which were jewelers on King St. in Charleston SC. The only thing I can find for them is a directory listing for 1861.

So to summarize: I have an 1858 coin silver salver made in New York and retailed in Charleston SC.

Am I on the right track? Anyone have any additional info?

Thanks in advance

Robert

Evans had a large and widespread wholesale clientele, including in the south. I do not know who holds them, but the bibliography of Teague family papers notes a number of letters from Spencer & Teague to New York City dealers and suppliers.

I believe Spencer & Teague were George W Spencer and Isaac Newton Teague. At least they were the only jewelers in Charleston in 1860 that I could find with those surnames. Apparently the onset of the Civil War gave their business a good start but ultimately also contributed to its failure.

George W Spencer continued as a jeweler in Charleston at least until the 1880's. It appears Isaac Newton Teague was a businessman and probate judge in other parts of South Carolina.
