I have two items that seem similar and have similar silversmiths. One is (what seems to be) a water jug from Shreve, Brown & Co. The other item is an ornate bowl by Shreve, Crump & Low. I have looked thru Yahoo and don't seem to get much help. I am new to this and any help would be appreciated. Thank you -- Terry IP: Logged |

The person common to both your pieces is Benjamin Shreve. He joined the old firm of Jones, Ball & Co in 1852. In 1857, he became a full partner and the firm name was changed to Shreve, Brown & Co. This lasted until 1860, when the name was changed to Shreve, Stanwood & Co. and to Shreve, Crump & Low in 1869. The company, with Ben still at the helm, incorporated in 1888 and continues today. The company, in its various forms, did not manufacture goods, but commissioned them from the best makers of the day. IP: Logged |
