What does a rams head mark and a spoked wheel mean? They are on the bottom of a silver cup by John Wendt & Co retailed by Ball, Black & Co. Cup is engraved "Maud 1866".

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello,

The ram's head and spoked wheel appear to have been simply two more marks used by Wendt in conjunction with the W & Co. in a shield. As you probably know, pieces by Wendt bearing his trademarks are quite uncommon. Most Wendt hollowware is simply marked with the retailer's stamp, often in conjuction with "ENGLISH SILVER".

Brent, thank you for your prompt reply about the Wendt silver marks. I read that some pieces in the late 1850s and early '60s were 950 silver. How could I determine if the cup I have is one of them?
Thanks, Florence

My cup does not have the 925/1000 mark. Is there a way I can tell if it is sterling? It seems to act like sterling when rub it with a silver cloth. Can holloware also be sterling?
Thank you. I am trying to learn.
