I don't have any verified samples of coin silver that I can use for comparison. I have read where it has a definite feel that sterling does not. I do have two serving pieces of J. Polhamus Ionic pattern that have pat. 1860 and a number 5 stamped at the base of the handle but no sterling mark and have been told that this is a period of transition period to sterling. These do feel thinner than similar sterling tablespoons. Is it possible that these are coin? Thanks.

Thats going to be real hard to say.... most coin silver does not feel any different than sterling does from the same period when the weight are simular, at least that is my experiance.... I know that most of my coin has a different hue than does my sterling... i can't say why... the only difference seems to be that the coin has a Blue hue, where the sterling has a more white hue... if that makes any sense...

I know that different makers of coin would use different thickness of the metal that their conterparts, but that may have been due to the request of the client they were making it for...
