Above is a nice mustard ladle with the retailer’s mark for F. C. Von Borestel of Anderson, South Carolina. He was born February 6, 1821, was in the Seneca Rangers, had a jewelry store and was a photographer. Somewhere along the line he dropped the Von and his grave simply had Frederick C. Borestel. The Von part of Borstel's name is not entirely omitted on his grave marker. Instead, it is represented by a small "v." It appears that his name was given as F C v Borstel more often than not throughout his life in America. He died on 6 December 1876. If by chance it has not already been noted elsewhere, Borstel was born in Pommern, Prussia. He immigrated to the U S through the Port of New York in 1842. Thank you Bascall for the additional information. You have better eyes than I do to spot the small v. IP: Logged |
