I recently acquired this unmarked coin porringer. It is inscribed "Foster/Anna Leach Whitney from Grandmother Foster/ March 26, 1856. I found one online with the exact handle by Pear & Bacall of Boston, in business 1850. Would it be reasonable to assume this one is their work? Was not able to track down the family online.

I suspect that the original recipient of this porringer was the daughter of Elisha and Charlotte Whitney of Beverly, Massachusetts to mark the occasion of their daughters birth. Also the presenter was possibly Anna's maternal grandmother Harriet Foster. Elizabeth Whitney nee Leach was the paternal grandmother. So far as I can tell, Anna never married. She is listed in the 1900 Census for Beverly with her mother whose occupation is given as capitalist. Not an unsual occupation for that time on its own except maybe when it refers to a female. You are welcome vathek. I was about to add that Elisha was a master mariner. IP: Logged |
